How to choose between a showcase site and a web application

The question comes up systematically in our initial conversations with project owners: "Do I need a website or an application?" The boundary between the two has become blurred, and the answer rarely depends on budget. It depends on what you expect from your online presence.

A showcase site, in its modern form, is a presentation and conversion tool. It displays your services, carries your brand identity, captures leads via forms or calls to action, and ranks on search engines. For the majority of service businesses — firms, agencies, liberal professions, tradespeople — that is exactly what is needed.

A web application comes into play when your project involves advanced interactivity: user accounts, data processing, specific workflows, dashboards, online payments, booking systems. If a visitor needs to log in and perform specific actions, you are in web application territory.

The classic trap is building an application when a well-designed showcase site would suffice. A web application is more complex to develop, maintain and evolve. It requires thinking about security, performance under load, and data management. It is a justified investment when the need is real, but disproportionate when it is not.

The approach we recommend: start with your business objective. If your priority is to be found, to convince and to generate contacts, a premium showcase site will do the job better and faster than a complex application.
