Startups: your website is your first funding round

In the startup ecosystem, there is a widespread belief that causes considerable damage: the idea that the product is enough. That if the technology is good, the market will follow. That the website can wait, that a landing page cobbled together on Notion or Carrd will do until the Series A. This is a strategic error that proves expensive for those who make it.

An investor who receives a pitch deck, however brilliant, does the same thing within ten minutes: they type the startup's name into Google. What they find determines what happens next. A professional website with clear positioning, a legible value proposition and polished execution sends a strong signal: this team knows how to execute. A shoddy website sends the opposite signal, regardless of the quality of the product behind it.

The same logic applies to recruitment. The talent you are trying to attract evaluates your startup through your online presence before even applying. In a tech recruitment market where candidates have choices, your website is your first job interview. It must reflect your culture, your ambition and your seriousness.

What a startup needs from its website is not what an established SME needs. The structure must be designed for three simultaneous audiences: potential customers, investors and recruits. This means a homepage that states the problem solved and the solution offered in under five seconds, a team page that humanises the project, a press or news section that demonstrates traction, and a clear call to action tailored to each audience.

The most frequent mistake we observe in early-stage startups is confusing minimalism with negligence. A minimalist website can be extremely effective: Apple built a global brand with stripped-back pages. But effective minimalism is the result of rigorous design work, not a lack of time or budget. Every word, every space, every interaction must be intentional.

Search engine optimisation is a subject that startups often address too late. Yet it is an acquisition channel whose return increases over time. A startup that begins publishing structured content from its earliest months builds an SEO asset that will generate qualified traffic for years. Waiting until after a funding round to invest in SEO means losing two years of compounding.

At AKREA DIGITAL, we work with startups to build websites that serve their growth. Not showcase sites, but strategic tools that convert, recruit and reassure investors. If you are preparing a launch or a redesign, let's talk.
