Why 90% of SME websites do not convert

The finding is brutal but documented: the vast majority of SME websites do not generate leads. They exist, they are online, but they produce no measurable commercial results. The average conversion rate for a B2B website sits around 2.5%. For most SMEs, it is well below that.

The primary reason is structural. These sites were designed as digital brochures: a homepage, an about page, a services page, a contact page. No thought-out conversion path, no clear call to action, no immediately readable value proposition.

The second problem is the content. Institutional copy, written for the company rather than the visitor. "Market leader for 20 years" interests nobody. What the visitor wants to know is: "Does this company understand my problem and can it solve it?" If your site does not answer that question within the first ten seconds, the visitor is gone.

The third problem is technical. A slow site, not optimised for mobile, without HTTPS, without properly filled meta tags. In 2025, these basics are no longer optional. They are prerequisites. A site that does not meet them is invisible to Google and unconvincing to visitors.

Transforming a passive site into a lead generation tool does not necessarily require an enormous budget. It requires a methodical approach: clarify your value proposition, structure a conversion path, write content centred on your target audience's pain points, and implement tracking to measure and optimise continuously.

SMEs that treat their website as a commercial tool — and not as an administrative obligation — see a radical change in the quality and volume of their inbound leads. That is precisely what we offer SMEs: a site designed to convert, not just to exist. Also see our guide on how much a website costs to frame your investment.
